After pulling a heart-touching gesture during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, the Indian skipper Virat Kohli receives the influential ICC Spirit of Cricket award for 2019. Renown for his outspoken and aggressive attitude, Kohli could not believe himself and was rather shocked after receiving the esteemed ICC award.
However, the cricketer could not retain the titles from last year when he became the first cricketer to receive the three major ICC awards in the same year.
The Indian skipper was yet shocked in disbelief when he received the Spirit of the Year accolade for 2019. He was named for this award for his heart-touching gesture for the Australian cricketer Steven Smith.
It happened during India vs Australia clash in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 when Kohli asked his fans to cheer Smith instead of jeering him. The crowd in England gave Smith a rough welcome when he entered the ground donning the Australian jersey after serving a year-long ban.
Kohli surprised on receiving ICC 2019 Award:
However, this has been disbelieving for the present Indian skipper himself, who is known for his aggressive attitude on the field. Kohli also said that he is against the booing and shaming, and this is the one thing that he does not expect from the Indian cricket fans to be doing.
“I’m surprised that I have got it, after many years of being under the scanner for the wrong things,” Kohli said.
Apart from this, Kohli has also been named as the Captain of the ICC ODI Team of the Year 2019 and ICC Test Team of the Year 2019. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma won the ICC ODI cricketer of the Year for the stunning performances, including seven centuries out of the total of 1490 runs in ODIs throughout 2019. On the other hand, Deepak Chahar bagged the T20I Performance of the Year Award for his brilliant 6/7 vs Bangladesh in Nagpur T20I.
