Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should release the likes of Sunil Narine, Pat Cummins, Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik while letting 21-year-old batsman Shubman Gill take over the captaincy reins, former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra commented.

Shubman Gill was Kolkata Knight Rider’s highest run-scorer in IPL 2020 with 440 runs in 14 games, while spinner Varun Chakravarthy playing his first season for KKR picked up 17 wickets in 13 games.

Kolkata Knight Riders Should Retain 3 Players And Make Shubman Gill Skipper

Andre Russell had a pathetic IPL 2020, managing 117 runs averaging a dismal 13 besides picking 6 wickets but Aakash Chopra feels that he should be retained along with Shubman Gill and Varun Chakravarthy because he is a T20 specialist who can hit sixes at will as was evident in IPL 2019 when he scored 510 runs averaging 56.66 at a strike rate of 204.81.

“In my opinion, Kolkata Knight Riders should not retain too many players. I will take only three names — Shubman Gill, Andre Russell and Varun Chakravarthy. They should retain the three of them and make Shubman Gill the captain. I am thinking ahead, just like the Delhi Capitals did with Shreyas Iyer. So KKR should groom Gill for a better future,” he said.

“If KKR is seeing any captaincy material in Shubman Gill, then they will not get the chance again. If they let him go to another team, then Shubman Gill might do for that team what Rohit Sharma has done for Mumbai,” he added.

Shubman Gill of Kolkata Knight Riders has never averaged below 30 in an IPL season and he has scored 939 runs in 41 games averaging 33.53 with 7 fifties since his debut IPL year 2018.

Kolkata Knight Riders Can Release Sunil Narine And Pat Cummins

Sunil Narine who is Kolkata Knight Rider’s leading wicket-taker in IPL history with 127 wickets repeatedly changed his bowling action for being reported time and again has picked only 10 wickets in 2019 and 5 wickets in 2020.

After the first three seasons in 2012,2013 and 2014 when he picked more than 20 wickets, he wasn’t consistent in the next three years with the ball but managed to do well with bat to keep his place. But in IPL 2020, he scored only 121 runs averaging 13.44 and picked up 5 wickets averaging 60.4.

“They have to retain Varun Chakravarthy in any case and if they leave Andre Russell, he will be too expensive to buy again, so they should retain him as well. They can release Sunil Narine and Pat Cummins as a lot of money will get freed up when they release these two players,” he further suggested.

Eoin Morgan who scored 418 runs averaging 41.8 was handed captaincy midway by Dinesh Karthik but should be let go and bought back by Right To Match card, feels Aakash Chopra.

“Eoin Morgan, even if they want to make him the captain which I don’t think is a great idea, will not go for 12-15 crores in the auction. So I feel they should let him go and buy him back again if they want him,” Chopra signed off.

Kolkata Knight Riders had a mixed season in the UAE this time around where they won 7 out of 14 games but failed to make the playoffs due to a lower Net Run Rate in comparison to SunRisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore who qualified despite having same 14 points.
