Mysore Warriors have won their opening game of the Karnataka Premier League (KPL) 2017 against Bijapur Bulls dramatically on Monday.
Having to won the toss and opting to bat first, the Karun Nair-led side were off to a decent start, as they were 69-2 in the first ten overs. However, the hosts lost the way in the middle overs, as they were reduced to 85/5 in 12.1 overs. But, Suneel Raju and Jagadeesha Suchith played their way through to help Mysuru finish with a respectable 150/10 in 19.5 overs.
Ronit More was the stand out performer for Bijapur, as he finished with impressive figures of 4/25 in his full quota of four overs. Other bowlers like Abhimanyu Mithun and KC Cariappa played a good hand in restricting Warriors to just 150 on a batting pitch.
In reply, Bijapur Bulls lost their plot in the run chase, as their top order collapsed and they were put in a difficult situation at 36/3 in 6.2 overs. However, Dikshanshu Negi and Nidish put together a valuable 100-run partnership to put Bulls on the cusp of a victory.
Needing 33 off the last four overs and with two set batsmen at the crease, Bulls were the favourites to win the game. But Mysuru bowlers have held their nerve and tightened the screws in the death overs, as both Vyshak Vijay Kumar and Shreyas Gopal pulled off the thrilling win for the hosts. The former had managed to bowl an eye popping five dot balls in the 19th over to help Mysore get back into the game going into the final over. Eventually, they won the game with only four runs.
Vijay Kumar was adjourned as the Man of the Match for his splendid bowling in the slog overs. However, Bijapur bowlers need to be more disciplined in the next game after leaking as many as 23 extras in the game.
