Kuldeep Yadav was speechless For 10 minutes when Shane Warne and Anil Kumble were talking between themselves during his first test against Australia in 2017. Kuldeep Yadav, a left-arm unorthodox spinner, made both his test,one-day and T20I debuts in 2017.
Kuldeep Yadav has 36 wickets in 6 tests, 102 wickets in 59 one-dayers and 39 wickets in 21 T20Is. His averages are also phenomenal being only 24.12, 25.85 and 13.76 in tests,one-dayers and T20Is respectively. Kuldeep Yadav came into the spotlight after performing well for the Indian U-19 team in 2014 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in UAE where he also took a hat-trick against Scotland.
Kuldeep Yadav Requested Anil Kumble To Meet Shane Warne
Shane Warne, an Australian spin legend, who unlike Kuldeep Yadav, is a right-arm leg spinner but is second only to Muthiah Muralitharan as the leading wicket-taker in Test history. Muttiah Muralitharan has 800 wickets to his name while Shane Warne has 708 wickets in his tally. Besides 708 wickets in 145 tests, Shane Warne also has 293 wickets in 194 one-dayers.
Kuldeep Yadav, who was noticed by Australian spin legend Shane Warne after his memorable U19 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates finally made his place in the Indian test squad for the first time in 2017. He also finally got a chance to meet Shane Warne who was introduced by the then head coach of ‘Men in Blue’, another spin legend of India, Anil Kumble.
“I met Shane Warne during a Test match in Pune. When I met him for the first time, Anil Kumble was our coach and I had told him I want to meet Shane Warne. When I finally did, I couldn’t say anything for 10 minutes. He was talking with Anil bhai, explaining him something. I was just listening to both of them. Then finally, I started to talk. We talked a lot. I told him about my plans, about how I feel while bowling, how I try to bowl from different sides of the wicket. He told me ‘You think a lot,’” Kuldeep told TV presenter Madonna Tixeira on her Instagram show ‘Live Connect.’
Kuldeep Yadav said that Shane Warne guided him as a coach giving him suggestions and both of them chatted, which was unthinkable in his childhood. He never thought that he will meet Shane Warne ever in his life when he was a child so discussing bowling strategies was unthinkable to Kuldeep Yadav.
Kuldeep Yadav Appreciates Shane Warne’s Mindset
Kuldeep Yadav lauded Shane Warne’s mental strengths and stressed on the fact that Shane Warne used his mind to dismiss batsmen throughout the world.
“He is mentally very strong. I think more than his bowling, he got the batsmen out with his mind. His planning used to be a lot better. He said a lot of little things which tend to matter a lot,” added Kuldeep.
Kuldeep Yadav had, later on, exchanged notes with Shane Warne during IPL when the former was representing Kolkata Knight Riders and Shane Warne was working as a commentator.
“I met him many a times after that. He always used to guide me like a coach. Gradually he became like a friend. I spent a lot of time with him during our Australia tour. I always got the feeling that if I needed someone for suggestions he will be there. I chatted a lot on phone calls and messages.”
“When I was very young I never thought I will meet him, get to discuss cricket and bowling with him so it was a very big thing for him,” added Kuldeep.
The left-arm wrist-spinner will be seen in action for KKR when IPL 2020 starts in the UAE from September 19. The tournament was shifted out of India because of the pandemic situation in the country.
