Kumar Sangakkara achieves another couple of World Cup Records in Sydney
Well, in a close encounter today against Australia, Sri Lanka’s cricketers tried hard to get past the target of whopping 377 runs set by the Australians, but despite their best efforts they could not win. Ultimately, Australia won by 64 runs as the target proved too big to be achieved. Meanwhile, there was a bit of achievement for Sri Lankans as Kumar Sangakkara today became the first batsman to score hundreds in three consecutive World Cup matches when he yielded a superb run-a-ball century against Australia in a Pool A match in Sydney on Sunday.
Not only this, the 37-year-old seasoned left-hander’s 24th ton in his 402nd match also enabled him to equal the overall ODI record for consecutive hundreds held jointly by the Pakistan duo of Zaheer Abbas and Saeed Anwar, the South African trio of Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock and New Zealand’s Ross Taylor.
Earlier in the innings, Kumar Sangakkara became only the second batsman (after Sachin Tendulkar) to have scored 14,000 ODI runs when he got to 39 with a quick two runs off spinner Glenn Maxwell.
Sangakkara, however got out for 104 when he was caught in the deep by Aaron Finch off James Faulkner. However, since this World Cup happens to be the last ODI event of Sangakkara’s career, the unbeaten record of master blaster SachinTendulkar is still a far off dream to be scaled by anyone in future. Now retired, India greatest Icon Tendulkar remains way out in front at the top of the ODI run charts with 18,246 in 463 matches.
But nevertheless this does not down play the glorious journey of Kumar Sangakkara.
Well done Kumar, for you have given a substantial contribution in the international cricket.
