Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman, blamed dropped catches cost Chennai Super Kings (CSK) their loss at the hand of table-toppers Delhi Capitals. CSK’s terrible run in IPL 2020 continued on Saturday after they were defeated by Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium as based on opener Shikhar Dhawan’s ton, DC won by five wickets.
Chennai Super Kings are reeling at the sixth spot on the points table ahead of only Rajasthan and Punjab franchises as they stare at an early exit from the tournament which has never happened in IPL history as they are the only team to qualify every time for playoffs.
Chennai Loses Yet Again As Dwayne Bravo Was Unable To Bowl Last Over
MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat first in Sharjah against table-toppers Delhi Capitals. CSK got off to a shaky start losing opener Sam Curran early without scoring before Faf Du Plessis, and Shane Watson stitched 87 run partnership for 2nd wicket in 12 overs.
Faf Du Plessis top-scored with 58 while Shane Watson contributed by scoring 36 and Ambati Rayudu too played a brisk 45 after which Ravindra Jadeja played a cameo of 33 which came off only 13 balls.
CSK managed to post a fighting total of 179 runs on the board, but Delhi opener Shikhar Dhawan slammed his maiden IPL ton and was unbeaten on 101 off 58 balls to help his team chase down the target with a ball to spare and 5 wickets in hand.
CSK had 17 runs to defend in the final over and were pretty much alive in the game, but Axar Patel hammered three sixes of Ravindra Jadeja to seal the win for DC. With Dwayne Bravo unfit and out of the field, MS Dhoni had Ravindra Jadeja and Karn Sharma as his only options to bowl the final over as the other bowlers had finished their quota of 4 overs.
He backed left-handed spinner Ravindra Jadeja to do the job but all-rounder Axar Patel tilted the match in CSK’s favour after hitting the left-arm spinner for 3 sixes as he scored 21 off just 5 balls. Both of Shikhar Dhawan and Axar Patel being left-handers they didn’t face problems to counter-attack Ravindra Jadeja.
Kumar Sangakkara However Blamed Dropped Catches For Chennai’s Loss
Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan player and cricket expert, however, said it was not Ravindra Jadeja’s final over which was to be blamed for CSK’s defeat but dropped catches which cost CSK the game. Shikhar Dhawan was dropped as many as four times by CSK with the likes of Deepak Chahar, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni all dropping the left-hander and being offenders at some point of time during DC’s chase.
Kumar Sangakkara predicted that MS Dhoni probably had Dwayne Bravo in mind to bowl the final over, but it didn’t quite materialize with he being injured. Kumar Sangakkara is the 2nd highest run-scorer in ODIs. Kumar Sangakkara is also the 6th highest run-scorer in Tests.
“I think MSD had really planned on bowling Dwayne Bravo in the final over of the chase. Sam Curran got them back into the game with a clear shot at winning. Forced to bowl Jadeja in the end. Probably, Jadeja bowled too full. He should have bowled shorter and wider, getting the batsmen to cut and not allowing them to get on the front foot,” Kumar Sangakkara told Star Sports.
“But if CSK are to be brutally honest about why they lost today, they have to look at their fielding. You can talk about their 20th over as much as they want but if they had held on to their catches, Delhi Capitals may not have got close enough to win,” he added.
The defeat further dented CSK’s chances of qualifying for the playoffs as they remain sixth on the points table with only three wins from nine matches. However, CSK can still make it to the top four if they can win all of their remaining five games in the season.
