“Kumble-Kohli Matter Was Not Handled Properly,” – Sourav Ganguly

The news of a rift between former India Head Coach Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli was in public domain even before the start of the Champions Trophy. The defending champions went in the tournament with tensions between both the stalwarts and still managed to reach the final of the tournament. It was just a matter of one day after that embarrassing 180-run loss against Pakistan that Anil Kumble quit the job, citing untenable relation with the skipper.

However, he did mention that he came to know about Captain having reservations with his style of play a day before he resigned and then he wasted no time to quit. As per the reports, after Kohli expressed his thoughts with BCCI, The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) didn’t even meet Kumble and the former Indian leg-spinner called it a day. Surely, he was already given an indication from either the board or the captain.

With all the news revealed in front of the public, it left no room for secrecy and everyone came to know about a rift in the Indian backroom staff. Sourav Ganguly, one of the member of Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) – who has been given the job to appoint a new Head Coach of Indian cricket team – has said the matter between coach and captain was not handled properly and should have been taken care in a serious way,

“The matter between Kumble and Kohli should have been handled a lot better, by whoever in charge. It was not handled properly,” Ganguly told PTI.

Ganguly has raised a strong point as never ever during the Champions Trophy, news of BCCI playing a peacemaker come out. Though Amitabh Choudhary – BCCI’s acting secretary – travelled to England for the Champions Trophy but as soon as he landed, he quashed news of any rift between Kohli and Kumble.

In the end, it was the skipper who emerged as the winner in this rift and finally, Kumble had to make an exit before BCCI could announce a new coach. Through this, Kohli had also sent a clear message to BCCI that he wants a coach of his choice and with Ravi Shastri set to apply for the job, nothing is left to be assumed or presumed now.

The CAC will announce the new coach before Indian team tours Sri Lanka, which will be the first assignment for the incoming man in the role.
