New Zealand vs India 2020: ‘On a High at the Moment’, Says Debutant Kyle Jamieson

The hosts made a great comeback in the white-ball game with the three-match ODI series. The Tom Latham-led side did an amazing job with both the bat and the ball while they struggled a bit in their fielding. The debutant and lanky Kyle Jamieson was named as the Player of the Match for helping Ross Taylor to post the winning score in the death overs.

After losing the toss, the openers Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls gave the necessary start to New Zealand. The two batsmen went on to thrash the Indian bowlers before Nicholls was taken down by the leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Nicholls contributed with 59-ball 41 in the 93-run partnership with Guptill.

However, things went difficult for the Black Caps when Guptill was run-out by Shardul Thakur in the 30th over of the game. The hosts had aggregated a total of 157 runs when the opener went down with 79 to his name. The team struggled to score runs from thereon and lost two more wickets in the next four overs.

Nevertheless, the hosts gained the grip with the likes of Taylor on the crease till the last ball of the 50th over.

It was, however, Jamieson who lasted long enough with Taylor to lift the scores from less than 200-run mark to a decent score that wouldn’t have been easy for the opponents to chase. The lanky pacer went on to aggregate 25 runs with the help of a four and two stunning sixes.

And then afterwards when the Men in Blue came down to bat, they were left reeling and the top-order of India toppled inside first 10 overs. Young opener Prithvi Shaw played some free-flowing strokes. However, he couldn’t stay long at the crease.

After dismissing Shaw, the 25-year-old pacer then went on to deliver a maiden over, creating much-needed pressure on the Indian batsmen.

The last few overs of the game turned interesting as it gave the deja-vu of the unforgettable semi-final with the Black Caps in the World Cup 2019. The young pacer Navdeep Saini played an almost game-changing knock which included a couple of lusty blows into the stands.

The young lower-order batsman went on to thrash the Kiwi bowlers and scored 49-ball 45 before he was taken down by none other than the 6-feet 8 Jamieson.

After receiving the ‘Player of the Match’ award, Jamieson expressed his gratitude for being able to add runs alongside Taylor. Whereas, the right-hander felt happy with his contribution with the wickets and was relieved to feature in his debut international game.

“On a high at the moment, need time to sink it in; the game ebbed and flowed all along. Pretty simple, take it to the 50 overs (about his batting stint with Ross Taylor), a total of around 230-240, we would have been happy, just wanted to stay there and stick with Ross, be there till the end.

A surreal moment to get a wicket in the first over, it was more relief than anything else, happy that I didn’t go for too many. International cricket is high intensity with a big crowd watching along,” said the debutant Player of the Match winner.

After losing the second in the three-match limited-overs series, Virat Kohli and co. will have to buckle up for the last ODI to save the team from the possible whitewash.

The third and the last ODI will be played on 11 Feb at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. Whereas, the team will also have to look after their fielding while strengthening their bowling before they go head-on with the Black Caps in the two Tests.
