Lahiru Thirimanne Credits Kumar Sangakkara For His Batting Transformation
Lahiru Thirimanne made a mark on his comeback with a memorable 81 run knock in the third ODI at Pallekelle against India on Sunday. The innings was of great significance for two reasons – firstly it was the highest individual score for Sri Lanka in that game and secondly, it was his first innings after a 20-month hiatus due to injury.
Thirimanne was forced to return home from the Sri Lanka’s tour of England last year due to lower back strain which later became a grave problem. It was a huge setback for him as he was already struggling with his batting form, having able to score just 87 runs in the three Tests.
Consequently, he was rested for the two ODIs against Ireland and warmed the bench during the ODIs against England.
The knock in the third ODI at Pallekelle has not only given Sri Lanka a hope in the batting order but also will help Thirimanne in regaining the lost confidence.
Help from Sangakkara
Thirimanne’s knock could not help Sri Lanka win but the 28-year-old left-hander definitely was a sort of relief for the hosts who have continuously struggled with form. Speaking about his recovery period, Thirimanne revealed that he sought the help of former Sri Lanka great, Kumar Sangakkara, to come out of poor form.
“Out of the 20 months (out) I was injured for three months,” he told the media after the third ODI defeat in Pallekele. “A lot of batsmen got starts but could not convert them into big innings. In a game like this, at least three batsmen should go for big scores to reach a challenging total.”
Thirimanne said he spoke to Sangakkara, who retired from international cricket in 2015 but has been in great form for Surrey in the English County this season.
“I met Sanga during the England series and then a few other times as well. It was great to talk to him and get tips. He has played at the highest level and those little inputs he gives you can change your batting.”
