Lance Klusener Not in Favour of Reducing Bat Thickness; Votes for Reshaping

Former South African all-rounder Lance Klusener revealed reducing the thickness of the bat will not bring satisfactory results.

However, the 46-year-old Durban-born Klusener believes the reshaped willow could be helpful in the gentleman’s game owing to the bat and ball contest.

Klusener has a point to prove by saying the bat edges would not yield desired results after world cricket body International Cricket Council (ICC), put restrictions on the dimensions of the bat.

“Big 6s [sixes] come out the middle of the bat so reducing the size of the bat edges to me make no difference. Bat makers may need to reshape or rebalance bats,” Klusener told Deccan Chronicle.

Interestingly, the familiar name in cricket, Klusener during his career was also using the heavy bats.

The explosive left-handed batting all-rounder Klusener was known for his baseball-style hitting during his career while playing a pivotal role for the Proteas national team.

“T20 [Twenty20] cricket has forced all batsman to learn the technique if 6 hitting and forced batters to swing harder,” Klusener asserted.

Pertinently, the fresh rules came into force from September 28 onwards, as the new regulations include a change in Duckworth-Lewis System also apart from the dimensions of the bat.

The Zimbabwean batting coach Klusener reiterated the meat of the bat does the trick while adding the quality bats has made things easier for the batsman.

“Sweet-spot is in the middle at the highest point of the ridge of the bat. The better the wood the bigger the sweet spot,” Klusener maintained.

Klusener added the professional players, who are hitting the gym generate more power while focusing on their fitness.

“Improved fitness or strength levels of players in general also help in hitting many more boundaries than we have seen in the past,” Klusener remarked.

Before the fresh rule came into existence, many star cricketers were using the heavy bats which further included Little Master Sachin Tendulkar, swashbuckling Windies opener  Chris Gayle followed by Australia’s David Warner, who now uses regularly sized bats.

“There are no changes to the permitted width and length of a cricket bat, but the thickness of the edge can be no more than 40mm, and the thickness of the bat must not exceed 67mm at any point,” ICC stated earlier.

However, the ICC revealed. Umpires will be in place to have a close look at the standard of the bats which eventually meet the requirements.

“Umpires will have a gauge to check that bats meet the new regulations,” ICC release concluded.

Between 1996 and 2004, Klusener played 171 One-day internationals, 49 Tests. He bagged 272 wickets across formats.
