Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has pushed the inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League (LPL) scheduled until mid-November. The decision was taken in keeping mind the safety of players amid the surge of coronavirus worldwide.

LPL was, earlier, scheduled to take place between August 28 to September 20 with five teams participating in the T20 league. But with travel restrictions and safety concerns, SLC decided to postpone the tournament after consulting their health ministry.

Although mainly the reason to postpone the tournament was because of the increase in coronavirus cases, the Sri Lanka Cricket is also not ready to bear the additional financial burden of creating bio-secure bubbles and 14-day quarantine period, as reported by ESPNCricinfo.

“The said decision was taken by SLC in consideration of the health guidelines stipulated by the Ministry of Health subsequent to the meeting held with the Health Ministry Authorities,” the release further stated.

Lanka Premier League proposed dates are November 20th to December 12th:

While talking to ESPNCricinfo, SLC vice-president Ravin Wickramaratne said that the Lanka Premier League might be scheduled from November 20th to December 12th. The league could not be pushed for some weeks because then it might have clashed with the IPL 2020. The Sri Lankan players which are contracted with IPL franchise are likely to be seen in action in UAE as the league scheduled to start from 19th September.

“We’re not the experts, so we had to go with what the health ministry is telling us,” SLC vice-president Ravin Wickramaratne told ESPNcricinfo. “There’s a window from November 20th to December 12th, so that is what we are planning.”

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is yet to play a bilateral series since they last played against West Indies in March. There are speculations that Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is in conversation with Sri Lanka to host the three-match T20I series along with the Test series, which was earlier scheduled in July.
