Would Like To Replicate This Performance In Bangalore – Darren Lehmann
As far as the Australians are concerned, no one would have even entertained the thoughts of them beating Australia black and blue in the hosts’ own game. At Pune, what cricket fans witnessed wasn’t just another game, but a statement from Australia that rankings don’t matter on a particular day, but the actual performance does.
Banking on two sensation bowling efforts from slow left-arm spinner Steven O’Keefe, who picked up 12 wickets in the game, Australia comprehensively, defeated India with more than 2 days to spare. With the next Test at Bangalore, the stakes are quite high for the game.
Post his side’s big win, coach Darren Lehmann admitted that he would want his team to replicate a similar performance.
“Great result, really impressed with our batting,” said Lehmann. “It’s a challenge for both sides. We learned some lessons from Sri Lanka. A challenge to replicate that in Bangalore. We spoke about good defence and take on the game when you can.”
Nathan Lyon, who enjoyed bowling at Pune admitted that he sought to replicate the success of R. Ashwin on the slow and sluggish surfaces.
“Our plan was to compete hard, we did. We saw a lot of Ashwin, and we tried to replicate what he does in these conditions. Great, I’ll take this pitch everywhere,” said Lyon.
It was no surprise that O’Keefe was named the Man of the Match, and he praised his batsmen for adapting well to the surface on offer.
“A first innings was a bit of blur. The ball tended to skid on more than spin so it exposed the stumps and the LBW. My first six wickets was ordinary, I had to change it up quickly. Our batters worked really hard not to get beaten on one edge,” O’Keefe said.
