Rishabh Pant smashed his way into the record books with a scintillating knock of 159 not out in the first innings of the fourth Test against Australia in Sydney. His knock helped India make the most of a good start and pile up a mammoth 622 for 7 (declared). Pant, meanwhile, ended up creating and breaking quite a number of records during his stunning knock. So, here we take a look at those record.
1. Rishabh Pant became the first Indian keeper to score a Test century in Australia. The previous highest score by an Indian keeper in Australia was 89 by Farokh Engineer in the 1967 Adelaide Test. A few months ago, he had also become the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test century in England.
2. The southpaw now holds the record of highest overseas score by an Indian wicketkeeper in Tests and also became the first Indian wicketkeeper to score a 150+ score in Test cricket away from home. The previous highest individual Test score by an Indian keeper outside India was MS Dhoni’s 148 in the 2006 Faisalabad Test against Pakistan.
3. This was Pant’s second century away from home making him the first Indian wicketkeeper to score more than one century outside India. Four other keepers have scored an away hundred in Test cricket for India.
4. With centuries in England and Australia, Pant became only the 2nd wicketkeeper in Test history to score hundreds as a visiting player in both England and Australia. Windies’ Jeff Dujon was the first to achieve this incredible feat.
5. At 21 years 91 days, Pant became the youngest keeper to score a 150 in Test cricket. The previous youngest was Tatenda Taibu who made 153 going into the 2005 Dhaka Test against Bangladesh at the age of 21 years and 245 days.
6. Pant’s 159 not out is the joint highest individual score by an Asian keeper outside Asia in the longer format. Mushfiqur Rahim also scored 159 in the 2017 Wellington Test against New Zealand.
350 – Pant’s 350 runs in this series are the most by any Indian wicketkeeper away from home. He went past MS Dhoni, who had scored 349 against England in the five-match series in 2014.
