Losing Players To Greed Of Fixing Is Hugely Disappointing: Mickey Arthur

Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur has rued the loss of players in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal that has rocked the sport in the nation.

Pakistan team is one of the biggest sufferers of the spot-fixing menace. In 2010, they had to lose the services of three of their most important players- Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir- after they were found guilty of being involved in fixing during the England tour. The three players have returned to cricket but only Amir has managed to return to international cricket while the other two are still toiling hard at the domestic level.

The country is facing a similar situation now as they are in danger of losing as many as five players due to spot-fixing. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provisionally suspended Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Irfan and Shahzaib Hasan for breaking the PCB’s anti-corruption code during the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL).

“Players become greedy and that’s hurting international cricket in general and the recent case has hurt Pakistan,” Arthur said on Tuesday (March 21).

“All the boards including the PCB educate the players of the pitfalls. They have gotten reams and reams of lectures from the ICC (International Cricket Council) anti-corruption unit and they are doing a great job in education.

“There should be no complacency on the part of the players because losing players to the greed of fixing is hugely disappointing,” he added.

Arthur, former South Africa and Australia coach – who took charge of Pakistan last year – is particularly saddened by highly-rated opener Sharjeel Khan’s name in the scandal.

“He (Sharjeel) was in the team for all the formats. He had got his name on the map and he got himself fit and he was about to become an explosive player for us and it’s sad,” he concluded.
