LSG vs PBKS highlights: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), on Saturday (March 30), beat Punjab Kings by 21 runs to open their account in the ongoing IPL 2024. Set a target of 200 runs, PBKS finished their innings on 178/5 to suffer their second defeat in three games this season.
Captain Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow put PBKS in the driver’s seat by adding 102 runs for the first wicket. PBKS raced away to 61 for no loss at the end of the powerplay and the openers batted in the same manner after the end of fielding restrictions as well. In the eighth over, Dhawan hit Ravi Bishnoi for a six to bring up his fifty.
PBKS reached the 100-run mark in the 11th over and were looking destined to win the game comfortably before debutant Mayank Yadav turned the game on its head. He dismissed Bairstow for 42 in the 12th over to give LSG the much-needed breakthrough.
In the 14th over, he dismissed Prabhsimran Singh before sending back Jitesh Sharma in the 16th over to bring his team back into the game. With Mohsin Khan dismissing Dhawan in the 17th over, PBKS’ innings completely derailed as LSG went on to win the game quite comfortably in the end.
LSG vs PBKS: LSG innings
Earlier in the game, LSG won the toss and opted to bat first. The home side posted a big total if 199/8 in the allotted 20 overs. Quinton de Kock and KL Rahul added 34 runs for the first wicket before the latter departed for 15.
After collecting 12 runs from the first two overs, de Kock broke the shackles by hitting a six and a four against his compatriot Kagiso Rabada in the third over. In the fourth over, Rahul hit Arshdeep Singh for a six and a four as well but was dismissed in the same over.
Devdutt Padikkal got going by hitting two fours but did not last long and was dismissed for 9 by Sam Curran in the sixth over. At the end of the powerplay, LSG were on 54 for 2. Marcus Stoinis got the start but could not convert it and departed for 19.
It was followed by a much-needed 47-run stand between de Kock and Nicholas Pooran. The West Indies star played some big shots the give the innings some much-needed impetus. Arshdeep broke the stand by dismissing de Kock for 54. Two overs later, Pooran departed as well after scoring 42 off 21 balls.
LSG were on 146 for 5 in the 16th over when Rabada bowled Pooran. The 190-plus total was looking tough at that stage but Krunal Pandya’s brilliant cameo helped the home side finish on 199 for 8. The allrounder score an unbeaten 43 off 22 balls.
