Lucknow Likely To Host The Third ODI Between Ind And Nz At a New Venue

It looks like India is set to have a new venue to host an international cricket match in Lucknow. The Ekana international cricket stadium in Lucknow is likely to host a One Day International between India and New Zealand.  If this happens then, Lucknow will host its first international match in 23 years.

The venue to host the third ODI between India and New Zealand is specified as Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association by the BCCI, and there are speculations that the UPCA might shift the venue from the historic Green Park in Kanpur to the newly built Ekana cricket stadium in Lucknow. The series between India and New Zealand will begin on 22nd October. The first match will be played in Mumbai; the second will be played in Pune on October 25th. The venue for the third ODI is still undecided.

The Ekana stadium was inspected by a high powered delegation led by former UPCA Secretary and IPL governing body chairman Rajiv Shukla along with BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary on Thursday. The Duleep Trophy final was held at the Ekana International Stadium. A delegation comprising members from BCCI and ICC inspected the stadium before that match. The final was also the maiden first class match played at the stadium.

A member of the inspection team said:

“If the unfinished works are completed by September 30, we would revisit the stadium and take a final call.” Former Indian cricketer and UP sports minister said.

“After Metro in the city, we want international matches to be held at Lucknow stadium. But since some work are yet to be completed, a final call would be taken after inspection by the BCCI panel on September 30.” He added.

Lucknow’s stadium, with a seating capacity of 50 000, has ultra modern facilities for security, media, and team management. Besides, the city has a number of starred hotels and clubs and has already successfully hosted junior men’s world cup hockey in December last year. This is going to be a major asset for Lucknow.
