ToggleFormer England Cricket team all-rounder Luke Wright has announced his retirement from the first-class cricket. Meanwhile, he will continue playing white-ball cricket and has also extended his contract with Sussex.
An all-rounder in its purest form, Wright has been stalwart for Sussex. Luke Wright has represented Sussex in 144 first-class games in all, scoring 7,622 runs at 38.11, including 17 centuries and 38 half-centuries. Besides, he has also led the side in 2015 and 2017. His career-best first-class score of 226* came against Worcestershire in the 2015 County Championship. Also, the all-rounder has 120 wickets to his name including three five-wicket hauls.
Proud of my first-class stats: Wright
Following his retirement, Luke Wright admitted that he is content with his first-class record. Also, he added that it often surprises many people who think of me as a limited-overs specialist. Wright also admitted that he was lucky to join Sussex under Chris Adams and Peter Moores. Moreover, he also left a message for the budding cricketers saying that four-day cricket is the most rewarding format. Wright also urged everybody to play the long-formats of the game while growing up.
“I’m hugely proud of my first-class record – it’s something that has often surprised people who think of me as having been a white-ball specialist,” said Wright.
“I was lucky to join Sussex under Peter Moores and Chris Adams ahead of a period of unprecedented success for the county. I’ll miss first-class cricket greatly and would always advise any youngsters making their way in the game that four-day runs are always the most rewarding,” he added.
