Madan Lal has come down heavy on the team’s performance in the recently concluded tour of South Africa, calling out the players for their “casual” approach and their inability to learn from their mistakes.

At Newlands, Cape Town, the Proteas defeat the KL Rahul-led side by four runs to win the third and final ODI and complete a 3-0 clean sweep. Earlier on the tour, India had won the opening Test in Cape Town but lost the following two to concede that series too.

Madan Lal: Indian Batsmen Were Dismissed While Attempting The Glory Shot As They Didn’t Take Responsibility Losing A Won Match

Madan Lal, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, listed why India lost a match they should have easily won and why the twin series loss is so disappointing

“They got out while attempting the glory shot otherwise this match could have easily been won. In international matches, batters must take more responsibility. If you go in with a casual approach, you are going to keep losing matches and series like this. Apart from the first Test, we haven’t played good cricket. We have gifted games, that we should have won, to South Africa,” said Mafdan Lal.

“They (the players) are just very casual and are playing casual shots. Rishabh Pant played a casual shot and he didn’t keep the wicket well either, dropping two caught behind chances. We didn’t see a 100-150-run partnership. We haven’t learned from our mistakes,” Madan Lal elaborated.

The Indian cricket team’s tour of South Africa ended in an embarrassing 0-3 whitewash at the hands of the home team in the one-day internationals. The defeat comes at the back of a demoralizing 1-2 loss in the Test series. India got off to a great start to the series with a victory in the first Test at Centurion.

But the Proteas players put their entire might in the remaining two Test matches and chased down 200-run plus targets in the fourth innings at Johannesburg and Cape Town to upset a higher-ranked Team India, who were looking to win their maiden Test series in the Rainbow nation.

The ODIs were played on pitches that were spin-friendly but India failed to make the most of the conditions. Stand-in captain KL Rahul’s leadership lacked spunk and imagination and India’s ODI template backfired as there was no zing in either batting or bowling.

The team was in good positions while bowling and during the chase in the first and third ODIs, but lost out at crucial moments. In the second ODI, the bowlers couldn’t defend a 280-plus total.

Sanjay Manjrekar Claims The South African Tour Was One Of The Poorest

Meanwhile, former batters Sanjay Manjrekar and Aakash Chopra also reacted to the series of defeats.

“The way the match ended sums up the whole trip for India. It has to be one of the poorest Indian tours to South Africa. That’s how it was destined to be. It just wasn’t India’s time in South Africa. It is a bad loss,” Sanjay Manjrekar said.

“Last year, the overwhelming thought during India’s tour to Sri Lanka was that India can field two teams at the same time and still win. 8 months later, India struggled to win a single game in a series with the best side (minus Rohit). How did we get here?” tweeted Aakash Chopra on Monday.

Cheteshwar Pujara scored only 124 runs at an average of 20 in the three Tests and his spot in the XI might be in danger the next time India take the field. Ajinkya Rahane only scored 136 runs at an average of 22.66 in the 3 Tests. In ODIs, the southpaw Shikhar Dhawan failed to hit a century but he smashed 169 runs at an average of 56.33. Apart from him, Virat Kohli scored 116 runs at an average of 38.67.

Rishabh Pant scored 85 runs in the second ODI to help India post 287/6. However, his struggle in batting while chasing continues in ODI cricket as he threw his wicket away in the 3rd ODI without scoring. Shreyas Iyer scored just 54 runs in 3 matches and was a let-down.
