Madhya Pradesh Government Announce Cash Prize For Mithali Raj & Co.

In yet another significant recognition for India women team’s outstanding performance in the recently-concluded Women’s World Cup, Madhya Pradesh government has announced a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh for Mithali Raj & Co.

The Women in Blue displayed brilliant form throughout the tournament and were agonisingly close to winning the historic World Cup but fell short by just 9 runs against England at Lord’s on Sunday (July 23). Prior to the loss on Sunday, the ladies had exceeded all the expectations to take India to its second World Cup final. India proved their title credentials in the very first game of the tournament by beating hosts and one of the favourites England. In the following three games they defeated reigning World T20 champions West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to send out a statement of intent. However, defeats against South Africa and Australia threatened to derail the promising campaign but the Women in Blue bounced back in style by thrashing New Zealand in the do-or-die game to qualify for the semifinal.

They did even better in the semifinal as they rode on Harmanpreet Kaur’s majestic 115-ball 171 runs knock to stun defending champions Australia by 36 runs and set up a date with England. And they had a great chance to even win the final as they needed just 37 runs with 7 wickets in hand but a dramatic collapse saw them losing the last 7 wickets for just 27 runs.

The narrow loss is surely heartbreaking but the Mithali Raj and her teammates have been garnering praise from all over for their heroics. Not only praise, they have also been rewarded for their stupendous show. Prior to the World Cup final, the BCCI had announced a cash prize of Rs 50 lakh for each player and the Madhya Pradesh also followed suit.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan took to Twitter to announce that the reward will be given to the team at a grand ceremony in Bhopal following their return.

“MP Govt. will felicitate @BCCIWomen World Cup team in a grand ceremony in Bhopal & award a prize of Rs. 50 lakhs,” he tweeted.
