Not just BCCI, but the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) as well is looking for a new coach for their side after Graham Ford stepped down from the post of Head Coach after Sri Lanka’s early exit from the first round of ICC Champions Trophy 2017.
SLC is looking for a man who can do wonders for the team and of course, a person who has represented the nation at the highest level can be the best man for the job but not in the case of Mahela Jayawardene, whose name has already been dumped by the President of Sri Lanka Cricket Board Thilanga Sumathilapa, terming him as short of experience candidate for the job,
“Mahela is still short of experience as a senior coach, he may be good as a T20 batting or a fielding coach,” Thilanga Sumathipala told the local Neth FM radio.
With this, the board has already ruled out one of the biggest icons of Sri Lankan cricket. Incidentally, the news has come on the same day when reports have suggested that Jayawardene is looking to apply for the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team.
In his short coaching stint with different sides, Jayawardene has had tasted success. His first stint as a batting consultant came when he was in the backroom staff of England team in 2015. He later worked with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, where he replaced Ricky Ponting in the job.
In the very first year, Jayawardene led his side to the IPL trophy and was hailed as one of the best coaches by many greats. He was also appointed as the coach of Bangladesh Premier League franchise Khulna Titans for a period for two seasons following the IPL success.
His stint with Mumbai Indians could very well work in his favour if he applies for the post of Head Coach of Indian cricket team. Meanwhile, we might see many cricketing greats applying for the post of Head Coach of Sri Lanka team as well.
