Bharat Sundaresan in his new book titled as ‘The Dhoni Touch’, on the life of former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has explored different aspects of the cricketer’s life throughout his burgeoning cricketing career.
Meanwhile, since his debut, Dhoni hasn’t had to look back. He has taken giant strides in his interesting career and has achieved everything possible. He is the only skipper in the world to clinch three ICC titles.
The author has shared various anecdotes from Dhoni’s life which stamps the authority he has on the field in particular. From beating Australia in their own backward – to leading India to two World Cup trophies he has done all while being a humble character.
Recalling an incident from India’s tour to Australia in 2008, the author depicted how different Dhoni was. It was a huge affair to beat the Aussie back then and Team India was on the verge of doing that.
With 10 runs to win, Dhoni sent a message back to the pavilion not to celebrate in the balcony. He also guided Rohit Sharma, who was his partner at the other end, how to conduct himself after the win.
“When they give their hand, just firmly hold yours out without folding it like an obligation, but don’t overdo it. And just stare blankly at them without any hint of excitement,” Dhoni said to Rohit.
Dhoni was desperate to prove that this win was not a fluke and this will happen over and over again.
Dhoni’s don’t allow his teammates to use ‘swear word’
The book also talks about how Dhoni restricted his team members from using expletives involving mother and sister. He has a different way to sledge and doesn’t like to overdo it.
‘Goli maarta hai apne style mein (He shoots in his own style.) He says the problem is if I allow my boys to give maa–behen ki gaali (swear words involving someone’s mother or sister); it’s they and not the one being subjected to it who’ll feel the pinch of what they’ve done for the rest of the day,’ one of Dhoni’s close friends explains.
However, after seven years and two tours later, Dhoni hadn’t changed his opinion on the matter.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni spoke in an event how he never held his players back from a confrontation but only asked them never to get personal.
