Most Man of the Series awards by Indian players in tests

After being adjudged the Man of the Series in the four-match Test series against West Indies, Indian off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin now holds the Indian record for most Man of the Series awards in Tests.

Ashwin surpassed former batting stalwarts Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Man of the Series awards five times. What makes his achievement all the more impressive is the fact that the spinner picked up the awards in just 13 series, while it took Sehwag 39 series and Sachin 74 series to get to win their five awards.

Here we are presenting to you the most Man of the Series awards won by Indian players in Tests:

7. Harbhajan Singh – 4:

Harbhajan Singh, who played an important role for the Indian team across all the formats in the last decade, won the award four times. The first Indian to pick a hattrick in Tests, he won his first award against the Australian team in the historic 2000-01 Test series. The turbantor represented India in 103 Tests and picked up 417 wickets.

6. Rahul Dravid – 4:

Arguably one of the finest Test batsmen of all time, Dravid won this award four times. His first award came against England in 2002 when he scored 602 runs including 3 hundreds and 1 fifty in the four-match Test series. The next three came against Australia(2003-04), West Indies(2006) and England(2011). The Wall, as he is fondly called, played 164 Tests for the country and scored 13288 runs.

5. Anil Kumble – 4:

India’s highest wicket-taker in Test has won the award four number of times. Kumble, who played  132 Tests for India and picked up a record 619 wickets, picked his first award against England in 1992. He picked 21 wickets in that three-matches series . His next three came against New Zealand(1999-00), Zimbabwe(2001-02) and Sri Lanka(2005-06).

4. Kapil Dev – 4:

Undoubtedly the greatest allrounder the country has ever produced, the legendary cricketer was selected Man of the Series on four occasions. First Indian to pick 400 wickets in Tests, his first award came against England in 1981-82. He scored 318 runs including one century and a fifty and picked up 22 wickets in the six-match series. His next three came against England(1982), West Indies(1983-84) and Australia(1985-86).

3. Virender Sehwag – 5:

The Nawab of Najafgarh, as he is fondly known has bagged this award five times. The only Indian to score a triple century, became the first Indian cricketer to pick this award five times for his brilliant performance in Sri Lanka in 2010. He scored 348 runs with the help of three centuries and one fifty and took seven wickets in the three-match series. His other four awards came against Pakistan, South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

 

2. Sachin Tendulkar:

 

Arguably the greatest batsman of all time, Sachin Tendulkar became the second cricketer after Sehwag to bag this honour five times. His first award came against Australia in 1997-98 series when he scored 446 runs in five innings with the help of 2 centuries and one fifty. His next four came against Australia(1999-00), England(2001-02), Bangladesh(2007) and Australia(2010).

1.R Ashwin – 6:

Leading the charts is R Ashwin with 6 awards. His first award came against West Indies in 2011-12 series when he picked up 22 wickets and scored 121 runs including a century. His next five came against New Zealand(2012), Australia(2012-13), Sri Lanka(2015-16), South Africa(2015-16)and West Indies(2016).
