Former England star batsman and the current opener of Somerset, Marcus Trescothick has agreed to extend his contract with the club for a year more which will see the southpaw play for the county team till the end of the 2011 season.
The deal was confirmed on Friday. It will be Trescothick’s 26th season with Somerset next year, and the southpaw is already the most prolific run getter in List A cricket for the club. Besides that, he also boasts of most centuries in first-class cricket.
“Obviously I’m delighted to be staying on for another year. “My hunger, desire and passion to play are as strong as it was when I started. The Club itself, along with the Members and supporters have stuck by me through thick and thin and it’s an honour to step out into the middle and represent them,” Trescothick said.
Trescothick hasn’t been in the best of touches of late, but given his experience, the southpaw is a force to reckon with even today. Despite averaging below 25 in the Championship matches this season, Somerset chief executive Lee Cooper was delighted with his decision and what he brings to the table.
“The name Marcus Trescothick has become synonymous with Somerset County Cricket Club, and throughout his time as a professional he has proved himself to be a cricketer of the very highest order,” Cooper said. “His work ethic is second to none and what he offers in the dressing room is absolutely invaluable. His enthusiasm for the game is infectious, and his wealth of experience is priceless.”
Not the most pleasing players around but Trescothick was a terrific opener during his heydeys and had the ability to smash the bowlers at will. The southpaw who is aged 41 has appeared in 79 Tests, 123 ODI’s and three T20I’s for England and adding to that he has amassed more than 25,000 first-class runs, 12,229 List A runs and 2363 T20 runs.
