Mark Wood Returns To England Squad For Champions Trophy

Fast bowler Mark Wood has been named in the England squad for the Champions Trophy 2017. The Durham pacer last played white ball cricket at international level last year against Pakistan in the home series. However, an injury ruled him out of the Bangladesh, India and West Indies tours.Selectors though have resisted with him.

David Willey has also returned to the team after missing the ODI series against West Indies due to an injury.

The exclusion of Steven Finn comes as a surprise. Though he has ben named in the 14 member squad for the two-match ODI series against Ireland.

The Eoin Morgan led squad includes likes of regulars like Jason Roy, Alex Hales, all-rounder Mooen Ali and Ben Stokes.

However, Stokes, Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler will miss the Ireland series as they have got permission from ECB to skip and play IPL whereas Jason Roy, Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings will have an early exit from the IPL to participate in the series.

“We have made encouraging progress over the past 18 months in white ball cricket and the squads selected reflects consistency and gives options across all disciplines. It is pleasing that Mark Wood and David Willey have returned to full fitness. They add variety and quality to our bowling strengths and David’s ability as an attacking batsman is also an important element for us,” James Whitaker, the national selector, said.
England will face Ireland in two matches ODI series before taking on South Africa ahead of the Champions Trophy.
The hosts will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh in the first game of the tournament on June 1.
