Marlon Samuels named West Indies Cricketer of the Year

Marlon Samuels was named the Cricketer of the Year and the One-Day International Cricketer of the Year at the West Indies Cricket Board’s annual awards function in Antigua on Tuesday (July 20).

While his form in the longest format of the game has been not so good, he has been in phenomenal form in the limited-overs’ format. His last ton in Test came in April last year against England. His performance in West Indies tour of Australia was poor too. He could score only 35 runs in 5 innings. However, he has starred for West Indies in the ODIs and T20s. His knock of 85* off just 66 balls in the final of this year’s World T20 helped West Indies to defeat England to win their second World T20 title. He was West Indies’ best batsman in the recently concluded tri-series too. The right-handed batsman scored 258 runs in 7 matches at an average of over 36 to take the second position in the list of highest run-scorers of the series. His highest score in the tri-series was 125.

Explosive batsman Chris Gayle, who started the World T20 campaign with a brilliant century against England , was named the T20 player of the year. Darren Bravo, who was West Indies best batsman in their Test series against Australia earlier this year, bagged the Test Player of the Year. He scored 247 runs in 5 innings at an astonishing average of over 49  to take the second position behind Adam Voges in the list of highest run-scorers. Dwayne Bravo was named the Caribbean T20 Player of the Year.
West Indies women’s skipper Stafanie Taylor was named the Women’s T20 Player of the Year and ODI Player of the Year awards. Taylor led West Indies Women to their maiden World T20 title in April. With 246 runs in 6 matches, she was the leading run-scorer in the tournament.

Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who made a brilliant Test debut in Sri Lanka last year by taking six wickets, was named Emerging Player of the Year.

Shimron Hetmyer, who led West Indies to victory in Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh earlier this year, bagged the Under-19 Player of the Year award.

Jason Mohammed and Veerasammy Permaul were named the PCL 50-over Player of the Year and PCL Four-day Player of the Year respectively.
