They had an advantage of winning the toss and bowling first but still, RCB faced their worst possible defeat in the history of IPL.
The visiting side was asked to chase a gettable target of 132 but they could only manage to score 49 runs, their lowest in the history.
Royal Challengers Bangalore had a torrid start, as they lost the wicket of skipper Virat Kohli in the very first over. The leader of the side could not control himself and went behind the ball outside off-stump, edging it out to the third slip.
It was the aggressive captaincy from Gambhir that continued to work, as RCB batting line-up flattened in front of the vicious bowling of KKR and they were four down for 24.
Just after a break off little more than two overs, another giant fell in form of Chris Gayle and RCB was a troubled campaign. They were still 92 runs away with just five wickets in hands.
Gayle’s wicket also marked the end of hopes for the team, as no batsmen showed the courage like Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada did for Delhi Daredevils the other night and RCB were all out on a score of 49.
It was a combined effort from KKR bowlers which wrote a script to RCB’s loss. Though the scorecard shows the difference in the number of wickets amongst all bowlers but every bowler played his role to the fullest.
Earlier when asked to bat after a delayed start of 30 minutes, Kolkata Knight Riders continued the gamble to open with their non-specialist opener, Sunil Narine. He too continued the trend of power hitting as a strong slogger of the ball smashed 18 runs in the very first over of the game off none other than Samuel Badree, the hat-trick taker in IPL this season. The mystery off-spinner continued the blitz and soon drove team’s score close to 50.
When it looked like the team have been able to snatch toss advantage from RCB, the visitors bounced back and dismissed Gautam Gambhir, who seemed to be struggling from the offset. His wicket marked a downfall of KKR batting line-up, as none of the succeeding batsmen could face RCB bowling as it was a pretty much difficult wicket to bat on.
The strong trio of Manish Pandey, Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan failed miserably and in none time, half of the team was back in the pavilion. Colin de Grandhomme too failed and the home side was 93/6.
For once, it looked like the team might not be able to touch even the 120 run mark but a crucial 18 from Chris Woakes steered the team to 120 and finally, they set a target of 132 for the power batting line up of RCB.
The score seemed to be on a lower side but in the end, proved to be a giant score in front of RCB, who could not even play 10 complete overs.
