The MSK Prasad-led selection panel of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday announced the three Indian squads (ODIs, T20Is and Tests) for the upcoming tour of the West Indies which starts from August 3 in Florida. One of the major surprises of the squad is the exclusion of Mayank Agarwal from the limited-overs format.

He was roped in the Indian World Cup squad as a backup opener for KL Rahul when the latter injured his back while attempting a catch against England. However, despite his addition in the squad, he was not given a single game in the World Cup.

Since he was a part of the Indian World Cup squad, his exclusion now from the limited-overs squad puts forward the question of how long a deserving player will have to wait for his chance.

Virat Kohli will lead the team in all three series after the captain made himself available for the full tour. It was initially reported that Kohli would be rested for the limited-overs series but the 30-year-old has decided to play all three formats in the West Indies.

India will be missing the services of MS Dhoni in the limited-overs series after the former captain made himself unavailable for the next two months. Dhoni, who holds an honorary post of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment of the Territorial Army, will be with his regiment for the said duration.

Mayank is a hefty run-scorer in the domestic circuit. He was the leading run-scorer in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, finishing the tournament with 1,160 runs. He had a memorable 2018 scoring 2141 runs in all formats the highest total by any batsman in an Indian domestic season.

India’s tour of the West Indies will begin with a three-match T20I series starting August 3. The teams will then play three ODIs and two Test matches between August 8-30. The two Test matches will be part of the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship.
