MCA implements Sachin Tendulkar’s 14-a-side suggestion for school cricket

Former Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s innovative idea of holding a 14-players-a-side game for school and college tournaments is finally being implemented  in Mumbai’s inter-school cricket (Harris and Giles Shield) this season, three years after it was suggested by the legendary batsman. As per the rules, only 11 players will field at any time but the remaining players can get a chance to bat or bowl depending on the captain’s decision.

The idea was first implemented by Haryana Cricket Association while the Mumbai Cricket Association introduced it earlier this year in an U-12 selection trial matches. The news was confirmed by PV Shetty, the MCA joint-secretary.

“The association (MCA) has recently given the go-ahead for the proposal and the same would be implemented in the Haris Shield and Garris Shield tournament,” Shetty told PTI over phone today.

The plan has been received the green light from the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA).

Talking to ESPNcricinfo, MSSA’s cricket secretary Nadeem Memon said: “The best batsmen among the 14 can be picked for 11. For instance, you will see that sometimes there are three fast bowlers who may not be good batsmen, so you can have three batsmen to fill up those three slots while a team is batting. When you come to bowl you can pick the eleven best bowlers who can bowl out the opposition. So, there will be tough competition.”

Sachin Tendulkar also welcomed the move and said that the step should have been taken earlier.

Talking to Hindustan Times, he said“Six more players will now get an opportunity in every game. If the boys are missing their school and leaving academics to play cricket then they should be either bowling or batting. Otherwise, they would be wasting their time. Now, all the 15 players in the team will have some performance to share with their neighbours. The whole idea is to encourage them by creating more opportunities.”

The legendary batsman said that the latest innovation will help the budding cricketers to improve their game.

“A batsman will get a variety of bowlers to face (as the captain can call-up anyone from the squad). Similarly, for a bowler, all his wickets would be of a proper batsman,” said Tendulkar.
