Bangladesh all-rounder, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who rose to prominence in his debut Test series against England has been called up for the warm up game and the first ODI of the series against New Zealand to be played on Boxing Day. Mustafizur Rahman, who played his last international game in March 2016 has also made a comeback to the ODI squad. Rahman suffered a shoulder injury during his short stint with Sussex and underwent a surgery for the same.
He was named the 22 members prefatory squad for the series against New Zealand that went a training of two weeks in Sydney to assimilate for the New Zealand series.
The 15-member squad will be led by their regular captain Mashrafe Mortaza.
In total, the selectors have made a total of four changes to the squad by leaving out Nasir Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Al-Amin Hossain, Taijul Islam for Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Tanveer Haider and Subashis Roy.
“We have kept the backbone of a settled squad that has been very successful over the last two years,” Minhajul Abedin, the Bangladesh chief selector said. “But at the same time, it is also important to get players in who we believe have plenty of potentials to perform at the highest level. Tanveer has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket and gives a different dimension to our attack as he is a genuine leg spinner. He has also impressed the coaching team during the camp in Australia.
“Subashis hits the deck and can extract bounce and movement off the wicket. He can be quite a handful in the conditions in New Zealand. Mehedi hasn’t played ODIs yet but has all the makings of a very useful limited-overs allrounder. We have reason to believe that he has the ability to serve Bangladesh in all formats and is one for the future,” he added.
Bangladesh is scheduled to play a full series against New Zealand comprising of three ODIs, three T20s and two Test matches.
