Members of Inaugural World T20 Winning Team Recall the Famous Win Against Pakistan 1

Sunday (September 24) marked the famous day at Johannesburg when India defeated Pakistan in a nail-biting contest to lift the maiden World T20 title in 2007.

Led by an inexperienced Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Team India exceeded all the expectations, defeating the likes of South Africa, England and Australia to make it to the finals. The mouth-watering clash at the Wanderers began on a good note for India after Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first.

However, India did not have the best of starts with the bat. With Virender Sehwag out of the match, Yusuf Pathan opened the innings, but could not do much. The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa and MS Dhoni also failed to score big. However, Gautam Gambhir played a crucial knock of 75 runs while Rohit Sharma slammed a quickfire 30, as India posted a respectable total of 157.

In reply, Shoaib Malik’s men began disastrously and were looking well out of the contest after being reduced to 77 for six before cameos from Misbah-ul-Haq, Yasir Arafat and Sohail Tanvir helped them to claw their way into the game. The equation was eventually down to 13 from the last over and six of the last five balls, after Joginder Sharma bowled a wide and conceded a six off his first ball.

However, Misbah-ul-Haq’s decision to play the risky scoop shot and ended up hitting the ball straight into S Sreesanth’s hand, as India won the game by five runs to lift the inaugural World T20 title.

On the tenth anniversary of that monumental win, the players of the World Cup-winning squad took to Twitter to recall the game. Here are some of the messages:
