Former England captain Michael Vaughan has come out in support of banned Australian cricketer Steve Smith. The 29 year old was found guilty in the ball tampering scandal that took place in Cape Town, South Africa.
He along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were sanctioned cricket Australia last week. The ex-Aussie skipper was banned from playing cricket for Australia for the next 12 months. He will also be ineligible to lead Australia until 2020.
Micheal Vaughan Calls Smith A Good Guy
However, since the scandal took place, Steve Smith had come out in public to apologize for his wrong doings. Smith is considered the greatest test cricketer of this generation.
But his involvement in the scandal has tarnished his image very badly. Micheal Vaughan was impressed with the way, Steve Smith has held himself after the incident.
He believes that Smith is a good guy after his break out in the press conference. However, the Englishman believes the next one year will be hard for Smith, as the Aussie is so obsessed with the game.
He also predicted that it might take some time to earn the respect back from public. But Vaughan further stated once Smith is back, the whole game will be respectful to him.
Vaughan also insisted that people should forgive Smith after the latter came out in public and sent a message to them admitting his mistake.
Both Steve Smith and David Warner had also lost their IPL contracts after the ban. The duo will endure a one year ban, while Bancroft is set to be out for nine months. It remains to be seen if Smith could be back to his previous level once he is back to the thick of things in international cricket next year.
Smith will need to quickly get over ball tampering scandal, a decision he will regret for the rest of his life. However, once he is back, he should concentrate solely on the game and should not commit further mistakes like the one in Cape Town.
