Over the years, Royal Challengers Bangalore have had best squad but despite the presence of stars like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and others, the team hasn’t been able to lift the trophy. On occasions, RCB’s bowling department has let the team down and is still, it continues to do so, as we saw in IPL 2019.

Following another poor run in the tournament, RCB did an overhaul in the coaching staff recently and there are now questions whether skipper Virat Kohli will keep his position or not. Quashing all the rumours, Mike Hesson, the newly appointed Director of Cricket of RCB, has confirmed that Kohli will stay as the captain as there hasn’t been any question asked on his captaincy.

“We don’t have that perception that Virat controls things. But may be he has had his learnings from the past (mistakes) while moving forward. There has been no question mark over Virat’s captaincy during last couple of weeks (of discussions), he said.

Kohli, who is now the only player in IPL to play for one franchise in all the seasons of the league, joined RCB in 2008.

His sudden progress after the year 2012 saw him become RCB’s full-time captain in 2013, a year where they finished at the fifth spot in the points table. In the next two years, RCB finished at the seventh and third spot, respectively.

In 2016, Kohli was in the form of his life in IPL and carried the team to the final of the tournament, where they lost to David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kohli had scored 974 runs in the tournament that year.

In the next three successive years, RCB have performed badly and have finished at the eighth, sixth and eighth spot, respectively.

Despite poor returns, there are no plans to replace Kohl as skipper. Also, given Kohli’s stature and brand value, RCB would also have no problems in continueingwith him as their captain despite the poor run in the tournament.

Meanwhile, RCB named their full coaching staff earlier today. Australia coach Sridharan Sriram has joined team’s backroom staff while Shankar Basu has also made his return to RCB, after completing a two-year full-time stint with the Indian cricket team.
