The Indian team was not considered the best fielding team in the world. The Indian had some excellent fielders like Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Robin Singh which would pick excellent catches that would change the course of the match. The team did have some average fielders from which the batsmen could steal singles easily.
“But today, thanks to the excellent facilities and also the advent of different formats of the game, they are treating it well. They know they can make a contribution to the team -win or lose -by just being a good fielder. Plus, fitness standards have improved,” India’s fielding coach R Sridhar said.
Applauding Ajinkya Rahane, Sridhar said, “He’s evolving into an excellent slip fielder because he’s got the temperament. He takes hundreds of catches and has got an excellent understanding of angles, pace and the depth of the ball.”
In the recent times because of IPL the fielding standards of the Indian team have improved a lot. The Current team has excellent fielders in the form of Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Rohit Sharma, Rahane, Suresh Raina. The fielding standard has improved a lot and especially their catching has been a huge plus.
India is considered one of the best fielding units along with New Zealand, South Africa and Australia in modern day cricket. The youngsters wanted to contribute to the team and make efforts to succeed in tough situations.
The Indian teams are not afraid to dive and save runs for their teams. This team has a huge way to go and other excellent fielders like Manish Pandey, Mayank Aggarwal, Hardik Pandya which can field brilliantly.
The Indian team has got the exposure of playing cricket at the highest level. Fielding plays an important role in international cricket which puts enough pressure on the batting team. Supporting bowlers and doing excellent fielding forces the batsmen to play big shots.
