Misbah-Ul-Haq All-Set To Bag Imtiaz Ahmed Spirit Of Cricket Trophy During PCB’s Annual Meeting
The most successful Test captain of Pakistan, Misbah-Ul-Haq is scheduled to receive the Imtiaz Ahmed Spirit of Cricket Trophy on Wednesday after he was nominated for the award considering the fact of rendering his excellent services to Pakistan.
Misbah, who hung his boots alongside Pakistan stalwart Younis Khan post the Caribbean tour, will be felicitated during the board Annual General meeting on May 25 (Thursday) after considering his good behaviour and commendable conduct on-the-field.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken a brand new initiative to felicitate the players, who have had given their best while representing the country and Misbah will be the first recipient of the coveted award.
The 42-year Misbah, who announced his retirement before the historic series win against the West Indies, is bound to receive the cash price of PKR 500,000 and the trophy. Misbah had played a significant role for Pakistan since he had emerged on the international scene.
The board has chalked out the plan couple of months before to award the trophy following due consideration of the officials for what Misbah became the ideal choice to offer for.
The inaugural award nominee Misbah was named by the committee under the tutelage of board’s governing board member Professor Aijaz Farooqui in the meeting held in Lahore. The other notable members included ICC umpire Ahsan Raza and Pakistani match referee Muhammad Anees.
PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan was also asked for his consent which further resulted in the mutual agreement to award Misbah. Misbah led Pakistan to number one position in the ICC Test rankings, considering the fact that they were playing away from home.
Misbah, who was criticised for being a slow starter has become a hero in his own terms while inspiring many across the globe for his calm and composed spirit on and off-the-field.
It becomes pertinent, Misbah was also awarded the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award in December 2016. The Spirit of Cricket Trophy award is named after former Pakistan batsman Imtiaz Ahmed, the wicket-keeper batsman, who was known for his aggressive batting. Imtiaz passed away in 2016 on December 31, at the age of 88.
Interestingly, Imtiaz was the part of Pakistan’s first team, who played under Abdul Hafeez Kardar. Post his retirement, the deceased also mentored Pakistan women’s team.
The committee has also selected young leg-spinner Shadab Khan and promising fast bowler Hasan Ali for the award of 2016-17 cricketers of the year. Moreover, the best match referee award will go to Professor Mohammad Anees, who name has also been recommended by PCB for the ICC’s additional match referee panel earlier this year.
The former middle-order batsman Misbah has featured in 162 One-day Internationals, 75 Tests and 39 Twenty20 Internationals after making his international debut in 2001 against New Zealand in Auckland.
