Misbah-ul-Haq Unsure For Sydney Test; Hints At Retirement After MCG Test Loss

Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq has dropped a bombshell on his fans, as he hinted of putting curtains on his illustrious career during the post match conference of the Boxing Day Test.

On Friday, Pakistan succumbed to an innings defeat at the hands of Australia, as the whole side was dismissed under two sessions after trailing behind by 189 runs in the second innings. Even after posting a dominant total of 443 runs in the first innings, the visitors couldn’t avoid an embarrassing beating coming their way, as captain Misbah-ul-Haq was left livid with the result too.

Speaking to the media after the match, Misbah said he is disappointed with the result for sure and with his own lukewarm form too, having scored just 20 runs in his past four innings. The 42-year-old, however, hinted he might not play the third Test, saying he will take a call on his career within a day from now.

“I think I need to think about it. I always believed that if I couldn’t contribute to the team then it’s no point staying there. This is a point where I need to think about that, even before the next game [in Sydney] and after the series. Next couple of days I will think about it and decide what to do. There is no point in hanging around and doing nothing. I haven’t decided [about Sydney] but let’s see.”

Not only him, veteran batsman Younis Khan is also under scrutiny for his poor him, which in the end isn’t bringing desired results for Pakistan. Talking further about it, Misbah said the performance is not pleasing in any way and that the senior players should come to the side’s rescue, which has not happened in past two Tests.

Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq have scored just 130 runs among each other in the two matches played so far.

“It hurts you because as a senior player you have more responsibilities. Whenever you don’t perform, you don’t come up to your own expectations and [those] of all the fans and team, that is disappointing. You don’t play a game for those sort of failures, you want to stand up and perform in these pressure situations. That is disappointing and it hurts a lot.”

In the three-match series against Australia, Pakistan have lost the first two with the third one starting at Sydney from January 3, 2017.
