ToggleMitchell Marsh is in line to fill the boots of Steven Smith as the captain of Australia Test team, as per a report in Cricbuzz.
The 26-year-old all-rounder has played 27 Test matches till now in which he has scored 1166 runs and has snared 33 wickets.
Marsh made his comeback to the Test side for the third Ashes Test against England in Perth and straightway sent out a message by playing career-best innings of 181.
He has been one of the performing candidates for Australia right from his return.
Should he be given the captaincy job, he would become the 46th Test captain of Australia.
The decision to appoint him as the captain will come as a surprise, though.
The team management had opted for Tim Paine to lead on the fourth and the eventual final day of the third Test match.
Marsh was the part of the playing XI. Still, Paine was given the preference.
In fact, Shaun Marsh, who has an experience of 10 years of international cricket, was also part of the playing XI.
He is one of the experienced players, who has made around eight comebacks in the national side.
Yesterday (March 26) reports suggested that Tim Paine will be given the job.
However, it looks like the selectors are still pondering over the decision before making an official announcement.
Tim Paine might lead the side in the fourth Test match, starting on March 30.
It will be in the next complete series when Cricket Australia announces their full-time Test captain.
In the limited-overs format, the board has a ready to go man in the form of Aaron Finch.
He has also led the side earlier, which automatically clears the way for him to be appointed as Australia’s limited-overs captain.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that David Warner will not be taking part in the fourth Test match.
The vice-captain of Australia will fly back home along with captain Steven Smith as soon as the board announces the verdict.
These two, along with other players involved, are likely to cop up with a ban of one year.
Cricket Australia will make a statement regarding the matter tomorrow (March 28) which will make the matter clear.
Participation of Smith and Warner in IPL is also highly unlikely.
If banned by the cricket association, it would automatically rule these two out of the T20 tournament.
Meanwhile, the team management has called in Matt Renshaw in the Test side.
He will replace Warner in the playing XI, as it looks.
His recall indicates that Cameron Bancroft might play the Test match as had the board was looking to ban him as well, it would have called in two players.
Renshaw might pair Bancroft to start the proceedings in the fourth Test.
