The Padma Shri award which is a prestigious award given to all fields of work in India is one of the most prestigious award a sports person can win in the country.
The skipper of the Indian national women team Mithali Raj was bestowed upon by this honor by the president Pranab Mukherjee. Along with Mithali Raj, Bibek Debroy, Ravindra Jain and Saba Anjum were some others who received the prestige.
Mithali Raj who mentioned earlier that she did not believe that she could win the award when she was competing for it against the likes of Virat Kohli because of the dominance of men’s cricket in the country said that she was happy to win the award amidst all that were present.
Mithali Raj who represented India in more than 150 ODI’s felt that the national awards was a great way to make women cricket popular in a country where around 10 years ago a very few people were aware of women playing cricket. She said that from a situation like that to be winning an award in the stream is always big and prestigious.
Raj who was happy receiving the award added that she hoped her award would pump up girls who are vying cricket as an option and that people will start following women cricket after her winning the award.
