Former Australia allrounder has been roped in by San Francisco Unicorns as their head coach for the much-anticipated inaugural season of the Major League Cricket (MLC).
While the Australia great is not new to being a coach, he will don the head coach’s hat for the first time in his career. He has been serving as Delhi Capitals assistant coach since 2022 under head coach Ricky Ponting. Shane Watson is widely considered one of the best allrounders on modern times.
The former cricketer, who spent a record 150 weeks as the number one T20I allrounder in the world, won two ODI World Cups (2007 and 2015), two IPL titles (2008 and 2018), two ICC Champions Trophies and two IPL player of the season awards (2008 and 2013). He was the Player of the Match in both the Champions Trophy finals in 2006 and 2009.

“I’m thrilled to be coaching in the first ever Major League Cricket season, which will bring a high standard of T20 cricket to the United States,” Watson said after his appointment.
“Our roster is strong and we benefit from invaluable support from Cricket Victoria,” he added referring to the high performance partnership between San Francisco Unicorns and Cricket Victoria.
Watson has had a very impressive career as an allrounder in the IPL. He plied his trade for Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and won the IPL. In 2008, he helped Rajasthan win the inaugural IPL before scoring a century in the final to help Chennai Super Kings win the title in 2018. Overall, the former Australia star has scored 3875 runs and picked up 92 wickets in the IPL.
