Mohammad Hafeez ignored again as Pakistan announce their squad for New Zealand Test tour

There is still no place for experienced opener Mohammad Hafeez in the Test team as Pakistan announced their16-man  squad for the two-match Test series in New Zealand. Hafeez was dropped from the Test team for the fourth Test in England after a string of poor performances.

As reported in the Indian Express, a source revealed that the senior all-rounder was ignored failing a bowling test at the PCB’s biomechanic lab in Lahore. The 36-year old has not been able to bowl since mid-2015 after the ICC declared his bowling action illegal.

As quoted in the report, a source said:“Basically the selectors wanted to see if Hafeez could clear the preliminary bowling assessment test in Lahore after which the PCB would have sent him for the ICC bowling assessment test in England.”

Meanwhile, Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Rizwan, who have never represented Pakistan in Tests before, have been selected in the squad. Although the two are yet to feature in the longest format of the game, they are regular in the limited-overs format.

Apart from Zulfiqar Babar, all the players who are in the squad for the ongoing Test series against West Indies have been retained for the New Zealand tour. With the conditions in New Zealand expected to be favourable for fast bowlers, the 16-man squad has as many as five pacers. Yasir Shah and Mohammad Nawaz will take care of the spin department.

“The Test team has been selected keeping in mind the conditions in New Zealand and the recent performances of players in the recent Test series against England and West Indies. The team is a fine blend of experience and youth, and the selectors have stick to the same combination of players selected against England and West Indies series earlier and believe that team will do well in the tour,” chief selector Inzamam ul Haq said.

The first match of the series is scheduled to be played from November 17 at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

Squad: Azhar Ali, Sami Aslam, Sharjeel Khan, Asad Shafiq, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (C), Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Nawaz, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Sohail Khan, Rahat Ali, Imran Khan.
