Pakistan pacer Mohammad Irfan, who has featured in 60 ODIs and 22 T20Is, recalled the 2012 tour of India where he had made the T20I debut and made the ODI comeback. He reveals that during that series, India’s top-order batsman Gautam Gambhir was a victim of his bouncers. The speedster also clarified why he had said that he ended Gambhir’s career in that series
Pakistan played three-match ODI and two-match T20I series against India in 2012 -2013 which also became the last bilateral series between the two teams.
In the ODI series, the towering pacer Mohammad Irfan picked three wickets in which he two times dismissed Gautam Gambhir. The Indian opener also returned with the figure of 8,11 and 15 respectively in that series.
In a recent chat with Pakistan broadcaster Sawera Pasha on her Youtube chat show Cric Cast, Mohammad Irfan explained why he had, last year, said that he ended Gambhir’s career.
Irfan said that the player who didn’t perform in India-Pakistan matches are marked as zero. While observing that factor, he added that Gautam Gambhir was under pressure, stating that he could not see the ball.
“Actually whenever we have India-Pakistan matches, whoever does not perform well he becomes a zero and whoever performs becomes a hero,” Irfan said.
“The way I was bowling to Gautam Gambhir, he was not able to see the ball, the way he was playing my bouncer, everyone was saying that he is not looking like Gautam Gambhir,” he added.
Mohammad Irfan explained that after that 2012-2013 series, Gambhir could not retain his place in the Indian team. So, he concluded that the Indian cricketer career ended after the pacer’s stint
“Because there was so much pressure of my height and my bowling, so I had said from my side that I felt like that because after that he didn’t come back in the team, he was dropped from the team.”
“After that he played a few matches only and there also he could not perform. So, that was his last tour in 2012 when he played against me. So, that is why I said like that,” he further added.
Indeed, Gambhir was dropped from the white-ball cricket after he played the next England series in 2013. He made several comebacks in Tests in 2014 and 2016 but could not get his spot.
