Mohammed Shami has been asked to join the Indian team for the upcoming third Test against Australia at Ranchi.
The 27-year-old returned to action in a Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Gujarat earlier this week after recovering from a knee injury that had kept him on the sidelines for more than three months. However, the selectors resisted the urge to include the injury-prone pacer into the Test squad when they announced a 15-member squad for the remaining two games against Australia.
The Bengal star did not look at his best against Gujarat as he returned with figures of 0/36 in 7 overs. But any chance of him getting some match practice has been ended as he has been asked to skip the team’s quarterfinal tie against Maharashtra in Delhi on March 15.
According to reports in Ahmedabad Mirror, the Indian team management has asked the BCCI to allow the player to stay with the team. Consequently, the BCCI has asked him to travel to Ranchi, where the third Test will commence on March 16.
Meanwhile, the Indian players have been given a Holi break till March 12. They will assemble in Ranchi on March 13 to prepare for the crucial tie. Several Indian players like Abhinav Mukund, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Wriddhiman Saha and Karun Nair were spotted on a trek after the win in Bengaluru while Virat Kohli is spending the time at his home in Delhi.
On the other hand, the Australian team will also travel to Ranchi on March 13.
