India fast bowler Mohammed Shami’s is all to miss the upcoming One-day International (ODI) and T20I series against England early next year because of the knee injury he sustained during the third Test of the recently concluded Test series, that India won 4-0.
The injury, which ruled him out for the last two Tests, was initially thought to be a minor one and his omission from the playing XI was only seen as a precautionary measure. The fast bowler, who performed extremely well in the Test series, has a history with knee injuries. He had undergone a knee surgery after the last World Cup and was out for 15 months and speaking before the fourth Test in Mumbai, Kohli had said the team will not take a chance with his knee.
He had said:“After the Mohali Test, Shami felt a bit of soreness in his knee. We need to take a collective call on that. Because he has a history of knee surgery, we don’t want to push a player to an extent where we lose him for the whole season.”
With Australia set to visit India for a four-match Test series in February, the Indian team, it seems, is not willing to take a chance with their pace spearhead. The Times of India has reported the Bengal pacer will remain on the sidelines for more than a month which effectively rules him out of the limited-overs series.
The report further claimed the selectors might consider Ishant Sharma or the fit again Ashish Nehra as Shami’s replacement. Ishant made his comeback from Chikungunya during the Chennai Test and looked impressive while Nehra was doing really before he got injured during the IPL.
Meanwhile, the team is already plagued with several injuries. Rohit Sharma is certain to miss the series while there are dark clouds over Ajinkya Rahane’s participation too. Rahane suffered an avulsion fracture on his right index finger” which will take an around a month to get healed.
The three-match ODI series starts from January 15.
