Mohd Azharuddin Says It Is Not Correct to Compare Virat Kohli With Sachin Tendulkar
Kohli has already smashed 30 ODI centuries in his ODI career and is only behind Sachin Tendulkar in the century list in ODI cricket. He also became the fastest to reach 30 ODI centuries. The form Kohli is in a 20 more centuries can’t be ruled out, and the pundits even predict Kohli to break Tendulkar’s record in the future.
But Kohli himself feels that is a landmark which is still a long way and will be very difficult to achieve. Azhar believes that given Kohli’s exceptional fitness abilities he might go on to break Tendulkar’s record but said the constant comparison between the two was not in the right taste as both are stalwarts of the game and have done a lot for their country.
“Virat is a special player but comparing one player to another is difficult. When Sachin Tendulkar played, bowling attacks and conditions were different. Before that, Sunil Gavaskar faced a different set of challenges. If Kohli keeps at it, stays fit and remains consistent, then any record can be broken. But it is still a long way to go for Kohli.
“You just cannot compare the two. Kohli is a special player and Tendulkar was a special player. Sachin set many records and Kohli might one day overtake them. Nothing is impossible but you have to be consistent. Kohli is young now but reflexes slow down with age. But he has a different kind of fitness level,” Azhar said.
Meanwhile, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh who has been champions for India especially in the limited overs format has been overlooked with the selectors going for much fitter and younger guys. The former captain said that players with special abilities in batting and bowling must be given a leeway even if their fitness standards were not up to the level of other players in the team.
“You have to pass Yo-Yo tests to get into the team. There are different drills that you have to undergo. There are some players whose fitness levels are not high but their cricket skills are high. So they should be given some leverage.”
