Road to 2015 World Cup: Mohit Sharma may replace Ishant Sharma in Indian squad
Well, we all noticed the hard work put in by Mohit Sharma against England at Perth on Friday. Though india lost that game but Mohit’s contribution of 2 wickets for 36 runs in his 10 overs was definitely worth an applause. Now it seems that his hard work is about to be paid off. As per an interesting story running in Mumbai Mirror that states Mohit Sharma can replace injured Ishant Sharma in the World Cup 2015.
It is noteworthy to mention that Ishant suffered a knee injury during the Boxing Day Test in December. He was selected in the squad of Australia ODI at Sydney on January 26 but the match was abandoned due to bad weather conditions. After that Ishant’s knee flared up again during the training session for the match against England on Friday.
Mumbai Mirror has also published that key players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami are also not totally fit as yet. But Ishant’s injury is a bit more serious than the others and hence is a cause of worry. Indian needs to finalize its squad by 5th January. Apart from Mohit Sharma, Dhawal Kulkarni is also put on standby until then.
A source from the board was quoted saying that “We can’t sit back and watch silently. There is a need to address the issue before it is too late. We’ll take a final call by February 5.”
On the issue of monitoring Bhuvaneshwar Kumar’s health the source added “We’re watching him too but at this stage Ishant looks doubtful for World Cup.”
BCCI officials also stated that some members of the squad have left Adelaide – where the Indian Team is currently based, for a few days after seeking permission from the board. They have been asked to rejoin the rest of the squad on the 5th.
In my opinion it would be interesting to see whether Mohit Sharma would be able to prove his mettle in the World Cup or whether he’ll turn out to be a bad bet. Fingers crossed.
