MS Dhoni, Gary Kirsten Were Doubtful About Virat Kohli’s Selection: Dilip Vengsarkar
Indian current captain Virat Kohli was once in the position for his selection in the Indian team. The young Kohli had gained the name after leading India U-19 team to the victory in ICC U-19 World Cup 2008. The then chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar was ready for Kohli, to introduce in the national side. But then captain MS Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten hadn’t agreed for it.
Virat Kohli was the second-highest scorer for the U-19 team in that tournament. For his prolific performance, he grabbed the headlines because of his batting as well as captaincy. Vengsarkar, former Indian captain, said that he had a belief in the aggressive player’s technique.
So, he recommended Dhoni and Kristen to select Kohli for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. But according to Vengsarkar, they didn’t agree with him.
“There were an Emerging Players tournament in Australia (for) youngsters — four A-teams were there — India, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand,” Vengsarkar was quoted as saying by PTI.
“I and my colleagues decided that we will take the U-23 boys and at that time we had won the U-19 World Cup, Virat Kohli was the U-19 captain and I selected him in the team,” he added.
“He (Kohli) was technically sound and I thought he should be played. We were going to Sri Lanka and I felt that this is the ideal situation that he should be in the team. My four colleagues said ‘As you say Dilip Bhai’,” he said, referring to the other members of the selection panel.
“However, Gary and Dhoni were saying ‘No, we haven’t seen him and we will continue with the same team’. I told them ‘You haven’t seen him but I have seen and we have to take this boy’,” Vengsarkar said.
However, Virat Kohli made the debut in the Sri Lanks series in 2008. And now, we know how great batsman he is.
