MS Dhoni, the skipper of Chennai Super Kings, was involved in an incident of wide delivery even as CSK returned to winning ways by beating SunRisers Hyderabad by 20 runs. But 11 balls earlier, when 24 runs were needed by SRH to win the match, an incident happened which became a topic of discussion by cricketing experts. SRH could only score 3 runs in last 11 balls to lose after being placed in an advantageous position.
Shardul Thakur was bowling to SRH batsman Rashid Khan, and the ball was called wide by umpire Paul Reiffel as the ball went too wide of the batsman’s guard position.
The following delivery was about to be called wide too, as evident from the umpire’s movement of the hand. Still, after looking at a furious MS Dhoni behind the stumps, who glared at the umpire by putting his arms in the air in frustration, the umpire revoked his decision.
Sunil Gavaskar: Last Two Overs Were Enthralling To Watch
Despite the fact that many CSK fans have claimed that it wasn’t a revoke since the umpire had not signalled anything, but critics have questioned the umpire’s decision and mentioned the incident as ‘bullying’ of the umpire by skipper wicketkeeper MS Dhoni in social media.
Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian opening batsman, however, have defended MS Dhoni mentioning that incidents like these happen in cricket often.
“I don’t think he was rattled but obviously he a little concerned about what had happened with the last delivery from Karn Sharma which went for a boundary because he didn’t expect him to bowl that delivery,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
“And there it is again, for the wide he called that the batsman had moved or maybe the batsman got a bit to it. Whatever it was, the last two overs were thrilling to watch. That’s what the T20 is all about, that’s what the IPL is all about.”
SRH had defeated CSK by 7 runs in the first half of IPL 2020. SRH lost by 20 runs in the return leg as the David Warner led franchise fell short of CSK’s score of 167/6.
MS Dhoni Loses His Calmness Again
MS Dhoni had also vented his frustration in 2019 earlier in a match against Rajasthan Royals when Ben Stokes of RR bowled a full toss to Mitchell Santner, but the on-field umpire called a no-ball despite appearing to raise his arms to indicate so.
MS Dhoni had an argument with the umpires over the matter which became a hot topic in social media amidst critics and fans. MS Dhoni, who is otherwise known as Captain Cool for his calm presence, lost his composure by having a heated argument.
In CSK’s 8th match, 18th over bowled by Karan Sharma saw 19 runs, Shardul Thakur’s penultimate over of the SRH innings saw only 5 runs while Dwayne Bravo’s last over saw only 1 run as SRH lost by 20 runs.
CSK are placed 6th with three wins and five losses while SRH are a spot ahead with the superior net run rate.
