Dhoni is currently on a break from the game. He has not played any competitive match since World Cup 2019, that came against New Zealand. It was already confirmed that Dhoni would not travel to the West Indies as he served the Indian army.
After his stint with the army, he was expected to make a comeback for the home series against South Africa but he was unavailable for that series as well.
A report in Mumbai Mirror suggests that Dhoni is also not available for the Bangladesh T20Is, which might now only see him make a comeback for the West Indies series that takes place later this year.
While nothing has been confirmed, a report in IANS had sugged that Dhoni is backing out of international series to prepare Rishabh Pant ahead of T20 World Cup that takes place next year. More time Pant will get in white-ball cricket, more it will be beneficial for him.
While Dhoni’s international future remains in doubt, Dhoni is confirmed to lead Chennai Super Kings in the next season of the league as all the players signed by CSK before IPL 2018 were signed for a three-year period and the franchise will only take a call on seniors after IPL 2020.
Dhoni is set to play the game till then and his future beyond IPL will only be known after the tournament.
Recently, India skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri had also backed Dhoni, which confirms that he is in the scheme of things and might continue to play until Rishabh settles in white-ball cricket.
