India’s chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav has revealed that he has learned the art of reading pitches and setting field from former Indian captain, MS Dhoni. Dhoni is known to assist the youngsters and when Kuldeep announced himself at the International level, Dhoni was there to help him. The wicket-keeper batsman is often heard on the stump mic when he passes some vital pieces of information to his spinners.
Furthermore, Dhoni is a master of reading pitches and setting up the field. Both the aspects are crucial for the success of the team and as Dhoni served as India’s captain for almost a decade, he was able to get better at gauging the pitch conditions. Moreover, Dhoni’s mind works as a calculator and he knows what the batsmen are trying to do against his bowlers. Consequently, Dhoni will help his bowlers set up the field.
Kuldeep Yadav has learned a lot from MS Dhoni
In fact, it is noticed many times that Dhoni has come up with some masterstrokes in setting up the field and the plan has worked in the team’s favor. Dhoni is guile in his decision making and thus he helps the players in getting better with experience.
Similarly, Kuldeep Yadav has gained confidence in setting up his own field and he has received a lot of confidence after playing along with MS Dhoni. Yadav is also now a better reader of the pitch.
“When I started my career, I wasn’t good at reading the pitch. I learned about this aspect after I started playing with MS Dhoni. He would often tell me when I needed to spin the ball or where I needed to pitch it,” Kuldeep told Deep Dasgupta in the third episode of ESPNcricinfo Cricketbaazi.
“Dhoni was very good at setting the field as well. That’s why I never paid attention to field placement when I bowled with Dhoni keeping the wicket. He would understand where the batsman could try to hit me and set the field accordingly. It helped me to bowl with more confidence.
“This is something I learnt from him and since the time he has not played ODI cricket, this has gone missing as well.”
Meanwhile, Kuldeep also gave credit to the current skipper Virat Kohli for backing him to the hilt. Kuldeep disclosed that he sets his own field and Kohli supports him in the same. The Uttar Pradesh spinner added Kohli has shown faith in his and Chahal’s abilities.
“Today, when I come to bowl, I set my own field. Sometimes you go wrong if the captain is saying one thing and you have something else in mind. But you learn from these things. I appreciate Virat Kohli for this. He has always backed me. He believes in all the youngsters give them full freedom. That’s one of the reasons why Chahal and I have had a successful partnership,” he explained.
Kuldeep Yadav will like to make a roaring comeback into the game. The southpaw spinner will play for KKR in the IPL, whenever the tournament happens.
