Indian skipper MS Dhoni has quit Test Cricket with immediate effect after India suffered yet another overseas loss against Australia.

Dhoni, who played a total of 90 Tests for India, chose to call it quits from Test Cricket after India’s six consecutive overseas Test series loss at Melbourne. The announcement was made via a BCCI press release shortly after and it cited “the strain of playing all formats” as the reason.

“One of India’s greatest Test captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the test rankings, MS Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of cricket,” the board said. “BCCI, while respecting the decision of MS Dhoni to retire from Test cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India. Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian team for the fourth and final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney.”

Under Dhoni, India became number one in Test Cricket but when India started to tour overseas from 2011, their performances dipped. Starting from West Indies tour in 2011, Dhoni captained India in 22 overseas Tests, won only 2, lost 15 and drew 5.

In the third drawn Test at Melbourne of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2014-15, Dhoni became the fifth overall and the first Indian captain to score 10,000 International runs across all formats as a captain. He also scored the most number of runs (3452) as an Indian captain in Tests

With his retirement, it looks like that after the Sydney Test (where Wriddhiman Saha will keep wickets), Sanju Samson will take his spot as the regular wicket-keeper in the Test side.
