Chennai Super Kings’ skipper MS Dhoni almost pulled off one of the best chases in the history of IPL but in the end, the Yellow Army were denied a win by just one run.
All the efforts put in by Dhoni were in vain and the one-run defeat might hurt CSK for long, given that RCB were favourites before the start of the final over.
What happened on next six balls was a total thriller as Dhoni had his chances on first five balls while Umesh Yadav did the job on the ultimate delivery, helping RCB stay alive in the tournament.
Needing 26 runs to win in the final over, Dhoni started off with a four and clobbered next two deliveries for consecutive sixes.
He then followed up with a double and a six, taking down the match to the final ball.
With two needing off one delivery, CSK were the favourites but an alert Parthiv Patel dismissed Shardul Thakur with a direct throw, that saw RCB win by a margin of just one run.
Umesh Yadav would have also heaved a sigh of relief as Dhoni could not hit his leg-cutter, that made the difference in the end.
Enroute his 84*, Dhoni went on to create quite a few records.
On the personal front, he scored his best-ever T20 score.
It was more special for Dhoni as he had missed the last game due to a back spasm and it was his comeback match.
Apart from registering his best score, Dhoni also became the first-ever batsman in the history of IPL to hit 200 sixes.
Batsman | Sixes |
MS Dhoni | 203 |
Suresh Raina | 190 |
Rohit Sharma | 190 |
Virat Kohli | 186 |
Yusuf Pathan | 158 |
He was four sixes short of milestone before the start of the match but with seven big hits last night, Dhoni became the first batsman to hit 200 sixes in the tournament.
Apart from that, he once again showed his finishing abilities in IPL.
With this win, RCB kept their hopes of qualifying for the next round alive.
With three wins in 10 games, they are still placed at the last position in the points table but a win in each match will keep their hopes alive.
On the other hand, Chennai Super Kins sit at the top of the table with seven wins in 10 matches.
They are just a win away from qualifying for the next round but CSK will look to finish the league stage at the top position, which will give them two chances to qualify for the finals.
